Thomas Smith and Todd Steen have been colleagues at Hope College for thirty years. Both of them have done plenty of research in their respective fields–operations management and labor economics, respectively. But, they also like to dabble in sports statistics and use their research training to uncover more objective answers and insights into some common questions debated among sports fans. Smith has a Ph.D. in operations management from the University of Michigan (1994). Steen has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University (1992).
Tom Smith
Life long Detroit sports fan–quite miserable.
Life highlight is getting research on the prevent defense published in The Sporting News many years ago.

One of the most miserable people I know.
— his boss
Won’t even watch games on live TV.
— the cable company
Todd Steen
Also miserable, but not thinking about jumping off pictured cliff. So miserable his wife wouldn’t allow her picture here. Life highlight is having two (yes, two) hole in ones (or holes in one–it doesn’t matter because I have two).
Never has had a good photo taken of him, and not very good at using WordPress either.

Watches live TV all the time, and as a result, is miserable.
— his kids
Thinks he is smarter than everyone on sports talk TV shows.
— his wife
